The month at NACC was really fun. I had an Opening on April 7th.   Then every other night I was there painting.  Well at least beginning a painting with the focus all on birds.

So I painted Ptarmigans

an Eagle

A raven (which I finished)

and Snow buntings

I had quite a few people take time to explore my paintings and I got to talk to a few of them. 🙂And after all the shows I had a spectator do the draw for the basket and Beth Collinson (one of my students) won the basketful of goodies. 🙂

It was a busy month and it was great to see everyone and to chat.  Now I am finally back to painting. I started a commission yesterday and also will be finishing the rest of the birds. I got the raven done before we went on holidays.

I have been really busy painting in preparation for my show at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre for the month of April.  Ian and I hung the show yesterday…no photos taken!    I have to say I am pretty pleased with how it looks.  I tried to leave space for the viewer to really get to look without being overwhelmed.  There are some older pieces and there are 10 brand new pieces both in watercolour and acrylic.

I continue to explore beautiful flowers and the new, never before seen acrylics are of birds!  🙂

This past few weeks have been very full with teaching.  I have completed 2 of the three foundation classes: Acrylic 1 and Watercolour 1.  This weekend I complete the last foundation class Drawing 1.  I am finding that the teaching space is far more comfortable!

I have mentioned that our house has experienced the death/rebirth cycle!   We are finally feeling settled in our space. There are still boxes that need to be gone through,  one box that seems to have disappeared…but for the most part we are settled. What a long time it takes to get this all done.

In other news I finally got my video done for my Luminous World Art Show.  I took a series of videos just hours before the Opening happened on October 28, 2016 but when I went to process them my old computer wasn’t being at all cooperative.  Now that I have a new computer I was finally able to do the work to get the video together and up on YouTube.  Check it out!

Thanks for dropping by!  See you soon.

dsc_0021So I have been working on a video to attach to this blog post, but my computer is 6 yrs old and has decided to be decrepit and ancient…there sadly won’t be a video until I get a new computer.  Soon (I hope).  The photo above is the first sale I had on Friday, which went to  Russell who came into the house to fix something and he also checked out the art.  He stood in front of this painting (photo below) and chuckled.  I loved his response because that is exactly how I felt while I was painting this Ice Road Batman!  It made me very happy.

My 4th annual Art Show and Sale  called “‘Luminous World’ with 60 paintings in 60 Days” is complete!  And it was amazing to see all the work I had been doing for the past 10 months up on the wall.  The new hanging system worked rather well.  As you can see in the photo below:

dsc_0075-copy

Each of these little paintings were done in a day (if I was lucky, most took 1 1/2 days  andsome took 2 full days) and I put them in a binder in protect plastic pages.  I continued to add to this binder until I had 60 paintings.  It is funny how 60 paintings don’t look like that much when they are in the binder, but as soon as they are framed and hanging.  Wow that is a lot of work! 🙂

I still have some 2017 calendars for sale.  If you want one you can order one here on my website. There are 4 different shipping options to choose from.  I had one person order one for Yellowknife, one for Canada, and one for International…they were all shipped and delivered to the various places!  🙂

Thank you for checking in on me.  There has been a lot going on and so my time for blogging disappeared.  But I  have it back and will start slowly.  See you next Thursday.  Have a great week.

Yahoo summer has arrived.  Today two days ago we had RAIN!  Which is a super yahoo.  The mosquitos will be bad as a result but the forest fire danger will be less.  We may even be happy to see the mosquitoes…well who am I kidding…not really!

Last week I finished teaching at Range Lake North school until January 2017.  🙂

Here they are drawing the lemon the week before.  I gridded the image to help the students to be more accurate when they were drawing.

Now we worked as fast as we could to get the painting finalized on one area at least.  The class period is a limited time so we got done what we could do.

And here we all are!  We had a great time.  I brought my secret recipe cookies (which I started the class with way back in January) and even had 3 packages to raffle off. Congrats to Logan, Amanda & Abby for winning the cookies.  I have to say it was a fun experience to teach this class.  They are funny and completely enjoyable group of 13 year olds!

As I was leaving the school I saw this display.  It is quite cool to be part of a new art program and be part of the inspiration of how the class is taught.  Robyn and I will work together again next January to bring this years grade 7 students along even further.   This year there was 19 students…next year… 27 students!  What a challenge that will be! 🙂

Now that summer is here I am going to only do a once a week post here and videos every two weeks. I want to enjoy the nicer weather.

Thank you so much for dropping by and for those who leave comments.  I appreciate all of it. See you next week on Thursday.

In April when the lakes were still covered with ice and there was a ton of snow still on the ground.

The day time temperature rose to be warm enough that I got this photo of me during my walk!05.28.16 April 18th and wearing a tshirt

This is not what I normally look like in April!  It can still be -20C.

Later that night we had the amazing thunder and lightening storm that went on for hours.  Incredible! So of course I thought I best do a painting!  It took me a while to get to be able to do it. But here it is.05.28.16 April Tempest Shawna LampiLegaree

This weeks video is a narrated time lapse of drawing a daisy in a vase with a cute ceramic ptarmigan all from life. It took me 1 1/2 hours to draw this little still life.  But it works down to only 4 minutes for your viewing.  Don’t want to torture you too much. 🙂

Next week will be part 2 – the painting of this still life.

I had to purchase a new external hard drive just for the videos.  Crazy how much space they take up.  So I spent last night transferring over all my videos.  Thankfully it wasn’t too many…yet.  🙂

See you on Monday.  I hope to get ahead of these videos so that I can catch up on my blog. BTW we are suppose to be getting into the + double digits this weekend.  Yahoo!  Spring is springing and it is still April.  I hope you have a warm weekend where ever you are.

So here I am…the day after my last class for the 2015/16 Winter Art Classes.  This weekend I taught a brand new class.  We painted fun pears, worked on a background for a flower, and then the piece resistance a still life with a donut!  🙂

The above photo is all of the classes from January until early April.

I am still teaching Acrylic 1 at Range Lake North School.  We did a colour wheel last week and started the journey of figuring out the difference between cool and warm colours and what that means.

So now I turn my focus to painting and videos.  A new video will be out on Thursday.  See you then.

Here is my second painting video to

It has been a very busy week. I have been getting prepared for my Watercolour 2 class that is happening this weekend.  It is the first time to teach this class.

I am now officially an ART HERMIT! Doing these videos add another layer to my art learning.  I am working on getting the very basics figured out and then I will add complexity as I go along…like tips and tricks videos.

Have a great weekend!  See you next week.

I thought I might be able to post while traveling but I didn’t even think about it. I had a great holiday!    I thought about art, I did drawings, I saw amazing sporting events and some fabulous scenery, I took reference photos and I learned about Danish Artist from the 18th and 19th century.

So today lets start with Nuuk Greenland and the Arctic Winter Games.  The first time Ian and I were in Nuuk was 30 years ago and then we came for the last Arctic Winter Games in 2002 (14 years ago).  It was wonderful to be back and to see the changes that have happened in the intervening years.

Here are some scenes around Nuuk.  We got there and the sun was shining…this was an unusual experience during our time.  We raced out and took photos to prove we saw the sun!  Nuuk is a very pretty city.  The houses are painted bright colours and against the backdrop of snow they were visual jewels.  I will be doing a few paintings from there!

Kid enjoying the fresh new snow after the blizzard that kept all the athletes away for an extra 24 hours.  It was a very unusual experience to have a full on blizzard (though not unusual for Nuuk or Iqaluit) to delay the various teams arrivals.  In fact the opening ceremony only had 1/2 the athletes there…the rest made it later that evening.  Every sport schedule had to be redone in a very short period of time.  The games folks in Nuuk pulled it off.  🙂 Below is a phone photo I took out of our hotel room window.03.30.16 Blizzard in Nuuk Greenland

This is a bronze statue of the “Mother of the Sea” (aka Sedna or Nuliajuk) that is on the beach by the museum.  The part of the story the artist captured is when the shaman made the journey to clean Nuliajuk’s hair.  She is the creator of all the sea life that the Inuit survived on for millennia.  But if the Inuit didn’t honour her and didn’t take care of the ocean, then the fish, seals, narwals, walruses and so on would be captured in her dirty hair.  This would cause great hunger to the Inuit and the shaman would take the transformative journey to the deep to clean her hair thus releasing all the animals of the sea.  It was an amazing sculpture.

It was so fun to have our nephews and our sister-in-law Terri at the games.  In all the years our family has been going it is the first time Legaree boys have competed!  🙂

There is plenty more to share but that is where i will stop today.  See you on Monday.  I hope to have something very special to share then!  🙂
